Reisblogster lanceert petitie tegen… reizen

Het is waarschijnlijk het favoriete onderwerp op Instagram: reizen. Wie een vakantie neemt, trekt dan ook liefst foto’s om het thuisfront jaloers te maken. Maar al deze kiekjes zijn ook slecht voor het milieu en daar wil reisblogster Elisabeth Brentano iets aan doen.

Het is voor mensen steeds eenvoudiger geworden om naar exotische oorden te trekken. We willen deze spectaculaire avonturen dan ook delen met vrienden en daarvoor betaalt de natuur een prijs. Reisblogster Elisabeth Brentano is het niet eens met hoe ver toeristen willen gaan voor die perfecte foto en lanceert daarom een petitie om een verandering teweeg te brengen. In haar petitie spreekt Brentano onder andere over de grote hoeveelheid afval, vuurtjes die worden aangestoken en het betreden van beschermde natuurgebieden.

Wereldwijd verspreid 

Niet alleen de acties hebben negatieve gevolgen, ook de verspreiding ervan baart de blogster zorgen. Terwijl we vroeger een filmrolletje afdrukten en in ons fotoalbum plakten, kunnen we nu beelden met heel de wereld delen. Als je dan iets illegaal doet, kunnen anderen er inspiratie uit halen. Brentano wil niet alleen de fotografen bewust maken van dit probleem, maar ook de platformen waarop de beelden gedeeld worden. “Sociale mediums zouden een systeem kunnen maken waar gebruikers overtredingen kunnen melden. Waarna de foto’s verwijderd worden. Deze gegevens zouden ook verzameld moeten worden in een databank, zodat merken er voor kunnen kiezen niet meer te werken met bepaalde influencers.” Met de petitie wil ze 15.000 handtekeningen inzamelen en dat lijkt haar aardig te lukken. Momenteel hebben al 13.000 mensen de lijst ondertekend.

When it comes to nature, it’s towering buttes, spindrift on mountains, raging waterfalls and a rare wildlife sighting that bring the wow factor for me. But this slot canyon, in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, really spoke to me during my time in Utah earlier this year. I’m not sure if it was the texture or the way the waves in the rock draw your eye into the middle of the scene, but my mental photo of the place looks exactly like this one, and I really love that. I spent 6 weeks on the road this spring with @im_nicolemarie exploring Utah, New Mexico and Arizona, and we barely scratched the surface of the hidden gems on our public lands in the southwest. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) recently released the new proposed plans for both Escalante and Bears Ears National Monuments, and it’s incredibly disappointing to see that many of our politicians have decided that extraction of resources (gas, coal and oil) is more important than protecting these incredible landscapes, the Native American cultural sites on them and the wildlife in the areas as well. Choosing profit over the planet is neither sustainable nor is it ethical, and there are ways around this — we just have to care and work together. Public commenting opened back up on Friday, and you have until November 15 to submit your thoughts (digitally or via snail mail), and then make sure you get out and VOTE this fall. Being basic never felt so good!
